โ–ถSummary

The Night in Nature (NIN) is a series of events that challenges people in four countries (Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark) to spend a night outdoors. Studies show that spending time in nature increases health and wellness as well as connects people with nature. The super goal of the NIN is to get 450 000 people to spend a night outdoors. The NIN takes place in August/September 2023. The NIN events also aim at 1) encouraging participation in outdoor recreational activities and outdoor sport, 2) raising awareness of the health benefits that outdoor recreational activities have, 3) engaging and supporting local clubs in organising events, and 4) developing the NIN concept for the future. Participating in low threshold events is safe and possible for everybody. Participants have a chance to learn skills needed in outdoor recreational activities and some events also offer tents and hammocks for participants. All events are free of charge. People can also join NIN independently by attending virtual events: one can participate in the event from oneโ€™s own backyard or local park by oneself, with family or with friends. These participants can join a virtual event on Facebook and share experiences there. Events are promoted by a large communication campaign. Platforms such as social media, television and radio are used in the campaign to maximize the reach of people. In the campaign as well as in the events environmental consciousness will be promoted by educating the public in sustainable practices and awareness of the right of public access. The expected result for the individual participants is lower threshold for outdoor activities and sport and a better understanding of them as tools for health. The partners expect to develop the concept of NIN and lay a strong basis for future cooperation. The main outputs of the project are communication tools and material, toolkits for event organisers and the inspirational content shared in the virtual community.
