Summary

The education shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic brought into sharp focus three acute needs of contemporary education that shaped the outlines of the SLIDE project: 1) a need to digitally empower university teachers who rapidly needed to transform from teaching professionals into learning experience designers and experts in emerging technologies, 2) a need to close the gap between self-perceived and actual digital competences of university students by equipping them with digital fluency, intelligence, and engagement skills, but also with pedagogical skills to sensitize them towards digital inclusion and to empower them to address sensitive contemporary societal issues while developing their digital competences, and 3) a need to combine the digital empowerment of teachers and students with the pedagogical approach of Service-Learning for the promotion of diversity an inclusion, while establishing connections between higher education institutions and communities at risk, either in direct proximity or rural/remote areas. The project answered to the growing need to promote inter-connected higher education systems, stimulate innovative learning and teaching practices, digital empowerment, inclusion, and diversity, and active citizenship.

Objectives

The SLIDE project aimed to intertwine the service-learning (SL) pedagogy with digital empowerment (DE) in order to promote inclusion (I) and diversity. The objectives were to: (1) strengthen service-learning (SL) as a pedagogical approach that promotes inclusion and diversity, as well as digital empowerment of the ones lagging behind the most, embedding and developing civic engagement within higher education students, teachers, and communities in Europe; (2) equip students with digital capabilities and skills necessary for the use of technology in creative, critical, competent, and inclusive ways through SL activities that address human, social, and environmental needs from the perspective of social justice; (3) increase the capacity and readiness of teachers to manage an effective shift towards digital education, to encourage their purposeful and inclusive use of digital technologies for teaching, as well as the development of digital pedagogy and expertise in the use of digital tools; (4) facilitate the exchange and co-creation of knowledge on SL and DE in Europe, consolidate institutional and national commitments and enable a culture of promotion and public articulation of university-community partnership through SL.

Activities

The project provides a holistic and forward-thinking approach to contemporary education. The initiative not only responds to immediate challenges but also lays a foundation for sustainable, inclusive, and digitally advanced learning environments. 1) The project partners organized a total of 20 focus groups with 120 service-learning stakeholders to discuss the needs, innovation, impact and conditions for success on service-learning and digital empowerment. These focus groups resulted in the creation of the Service-Learning and Digital Empowerment Manifesto. 2) The project developed two MOOC’s on digital empowerment, boosting digital literacy in higher education: one for HE teachers, one for HE students. Both MOOC’s consist of 8 modules focusing on topics like digital intelligence, digital wellbeing, use of interactive digital media in teaching and learning, digital engagement, and digital inclusion. Both MOOC’s are self-paced, registration is free. The MOOC’s are available in English and Slovak. Currently, 129 participants are enrolled in the MOOC for teachers, and 462 participants are enrolled in the MOOC for HE students. 3) In June 2023, the Learning, Teaching and Training Activity ‘Service-Learning and Digital Empowerment, how can we make it work?’ was organized, to train higher education teachers, trainers and educational leaders on digital empowerment. In this LTTA, 43 participants from 9 different countries were involved. 4) In October 2023, we organized the Online World Café event ‘Digital Empowerment Transformation with You!’ 35 HE teachers from 12 different countries took part in discussions on how to connect the service-learning pedagogy with digital inclusion. The input from participants resulted in a manual for teachers on how to integrate the OWC method in their own teaching practice. 5) In November 2024, we organized the hybrid Social Hackathon event ‘Digital bridges and gaps in society’. During this activity, 76 students worked together in multidisciplinary teams to solve social challenges focused on the topic of digital inclusion, proposed by 9 community partners from all over Europe. During the event, students connected online with community partners and other student teams, and were coached by international mentors. The input from participants resulted in a manual for teachers on how to integrate the hybrid social hackathon method in their own teaching practices. 6) During the SLIDE project, two Multiplier Events were organized in which the Project Results of the project were disseminated among external stakeholders. ME1 welcomed 175 participants (of which 35 connected virtually), and ME2 welcomed 216 participants (of which 71 connected virtually).

Impact

1) PR1: Service-Learning Inclusion, Diversity and Digital Empowerment Manifesto - The SL&DE Manifesto emancipates target groups involved in service learning and digital empowerment by formulating a policy and action plan for four stakeholder groups involved in service-learning. 2) PR2: MOOC Digital Empowerment – Teacher training for teachers, trainers and educational leaders - This e-learning module (accessed for free through the SL&DE European Hub) equips higher education teachers, trainers and educational leaders with skills necessary for the use of technology in creative, critical, competent and inclusive ways, but also to define the purposeful use of emerging technologies in education (such as AI, AR or robotics), to foster digital competence, fluency, intelligence and engagement of students, critical thinking, design thinking and student creativity. 3) PR3: Online World Café for teachers, trainers and educational leaders - The Online World Café method is developed for teachers, trainers and educational leaders in higher education interested in digital empowerment through community-university partnerships and service-learning that aims to help them to effectively utilize students, assess potential vulnerabilities and negative unforeseen consequences, which might arise from the use of emerging digital technologies. It aims for target groups that strive to become actively involved in shaping and, co-designing education. During the SLIDE project, a pilot event was organized in October with participants from all over Europe. Feedback from participants and lessons learned from the event resulted in a manual for teachers on the use of the Online World Café method in higher education teaching and learning practices. 4) PR4: MOOC Digital Development – Competence, fluency, intelligence and engagement of HEI students - This e-learning module equips students with skills to fully participate in digital education, but also with skills to make connections with local communities and sensibilize them towards digital empowerment of communities at risk. 5) PR5: Social Hackathon - The hybrid social hackathon method aims for students to engage in a peer-learning activity which will not only ensure learning by doing, but will also has a strong transnational, transdisciplinary and inclusive dimension. Students (including students with fewer opportunities) participated in the pilot of the social hackathon event, organized in November 2024. Students were part of teams, with each team selecting a community need (social, economic, migrant, cultural, educational or rural/remote) to address during the event in the form of an e-service-learning project. Representatives of community organizations from each partner’s country participated invited in the event to define the needs that were be addressed during the social hackathon. The insights from the pilot event and the feedback from participants resulted in a guideline for teachers for the use of the hybrid social hackathon method in higher education teaching and learning practices. 6) PR6: Service-Learning and Digital Empowerment Virtual European Hub - The European hub facilitates the exchange and co-creation of knowledge on digital empowerment, inclusion, diversity and service-learning in Europe and acts as a dissemination tool for innovative methods, learning and teaching materials, attracting more stakeholders to contribute to the growth of the content base. It is created for all stakeholders (project partner universities, other higher education (HE) institutions in their countries, community organizations, national service-learning networks) that want to exchange and co-create knowledge in Service-Learning (SL) and Digital Empowerment (DE) across and beyond the EU. The European hub allows users to browse the database of collaborators and the repository of stories with a specific set of keywords. The content of the Hub is dynamically updatable by the partners, also after termination of the SLIDE project. The project results generated the following strengths in our project consortium: 1. Diverse Stakeholder Engagement – The inclusion of a diverse group of participants in the focus groups in PR1, LTTA, Online World Café (PR3) and the Social Hackathon (PR5) demonstrated a strong variety of methods to engage educators, students, and community partners. This ensures a broad impact and knowledge-sharing across disciplines and countries. 2. Practical & Sustainable Outputs – The MOOCs (PR2&PR4), documentation (PR1, PR3, PR5 & PR7), and the Virtual European Hub (PR7) provide lasting resources beyond the project’s duration, ensuring long-term accessibility and continued use. 3. Interdisciplinary & Inclusive Approach – The project effectively integrated digital literacy, service-learning, and social inclusion, particularly by involving students with fewer opportunities, thus promoting equity and accessibility. 4. Focus on Digital Empowerment – By addressing not only technological competence but also critical engagement with emerging technologies (AI, AR, robotics), the project helps to ensure future-proof higher education.
