Break the chain: Providing ways to fight fake news and disinformation online
▶Summary
The consortium applied for this project recognizing the profound impact of the internet and social media in reshaping how we access and interact with information. These platforms, while providing unparalleled access to knowledge, also facilitate the rapid spread of disinformation and fake news. This is particularly troubling given the severe consequences associated with misinformation, including undermining public health, threatening democratic processes and impairing decision-making capabilities. Recent studies highlight that a substantial percentage of the population encounters fake news almost daily, with older adults over the age of 55 being particularly susceptible due to their lower confidence in identifying such misinformation. Despite campaigns targeting younger demographics, there is a critical need to extend educational initiatives to older adults. This project aims to develop targeted interventions to enhance digital literacy across all ages, focusing on the elderly to mitigate the detrimental effects of misinformation and foster a more informed and resilient society.
▶Objectives
By implementing the "Break the Chain" project, our goal was to empower adults, especially those aged 55 and older, to recognize and counter the influence of fake news and disinformation on their decision-making. We aimed to provide comprehensive education on the nature of disinformation, its impacts and strategies for detection and management. Project Objectives: Raise Awareness: Increase awareness about the spread of disinformation and its dangers. Detection and Coping: Help adults identify fake news online and develop strategies to manage its effects. Enhance Media Literacy: Improve critical thinking skills necessary to evaluate information sources. Support Educators: Develop innovative training approaches for adult educators to enhance media literacy education. The project targeted direct beneficiaries like older adults and adult trainers and indirect stakeholders including schools, NGOs, policymakers and journalists. This approach aimed to foster a community-wide response, enhancing societal resilience against misinformation. Through education, we sought to create informed individuals who could act as multipliers of reliable information, thereby strengthening public trust and safety in the media landscape.
▶Activities
In our project, we successfully executed a series of dynamic and impactful activities, significantly advancing our mission to combat fake news and disinformation while enhancing media literacy among adults. Here's a breakdown of our key activities and their triumphant outcomes: Comprehensive Analysis and Documentation: We initiated our project by identifying the existing knowledge and skills of adult educators regarding fake news and disinformation. We also documented their educational practices, providing a strong foundation for tailored training approaches. The situation concerning fake news and media literacy across various populations was thoroughly assessed, enabling us to design highly relevant educational tools and methodologies. Innovative Training Methodology and Manual Development: We designed a state-of-the-art training methodology and produced a comprehensive Manual in two parts. The first part of the Manual delved into the complexities of fake news and disinformation, equipping trainers with deep insights and a broad perspective. The second part focused on digital tools and methods to enhance trainers' media competencies and integrate technological resources into their training programs, dramatically boosting their effectiveness. Cutting-Edge Digital Tools: We developed a Web application that hosts a variety of activities related to fake news and disinformation. This application not only facilitates ongoing learning but also reminds users to engage with new content regularly, ensuring continuous development. Additionally, our Dynamic Demonstrator provided real-life scenarios as a practical tool, enhancing the learning experience and making the abstract concepts of disinformation tangibly understandable. Community Building and Engagement: The creation of the 'Break the Chain Community' virtual space has been a cornerstone for sustaining and expanding the impact of our project. This platform supports adopters and practitioners, fostering a collaborative environment for sharing best practices and continuous learning. Promotion and Dissemination: Our project's reach was exponentially increased through dedicated multiplier events, targeted dissemination activities and strategic exploitation efforts. These initiatives ensure that the valuable resources and learnings developed were accessible to a broad audience, including beyond the project's completion. Specialized Webinar for Trainers: We also rolled out a specifically designed webinar for adult trainers, which has been instrumental in further elevating their competencies and preparedness to tackle disinformation effectively. Thanks to these strategically planned and excellently executed activities, we have empowered adult educators with innovative tools, enhanced the media literacy skills of countless adults and fostered an environment where fake news can be identified and combatted more effectively. Our project not only met but exceeded its objectives, making a measurable difference in the fight against disinformation.
