Step Up Face the Challenge
▶Summary
The Step Up Face the Challenges project was created for students aged 12-15 from five European countries, aiming to promote a healthy lifestyle in low secondary schools. Integrating healthy living...
▶Objectives
We aimed to help students understand the concept of a “healthy lifestyle” and its benefits for both physical and mental well-being in daily life. We also wanted them to recognize the consequences of their choices, such as neglecting their health. By encouraging students to take on challenges and maintain them for a set period, we hoped to instil habits that would become essential and automatic in their lives. These challenges would help students discover personal growth through self-assessment techniques and basic self-coaching. We wanted to support the professional development of educators, particularly in promoting healthy lifestyles and designing self-assessment plans. Since English was the language of our partnership, we encouraged students to improve their social, emotional, and language skills through various activities and shared experiences, as these were effective learning methods for their age group. Additionally, we aimed to foster intercultural connections between schools in Europe, helping our students become more tolerant of different cultures and beliefs.
▶Activities
The main concept of our project was rooted in the theory of small steps. It involved setting manageable health goals, tracking progress, and fostering health awareness to promote healthy behaviours. We aimed for students to create and follow their personal healthy lifestyle plans, starting with a questionnaire provided at the outset. They undertook various challenges tailored to their lifestyle changes, needing substantial support and motivation to stay on course. During project meetings, students collaborated in international teams to discuss their views on healthy living and the challenges they faced. They created motivational materials like posters, photos, videos, and collages to share their progress, and to motivate themselves. We introduced opportunities for new hobbies and local sports clubs, with coaches visiting schools to showcase their sports and explain their benefits. Students also met online to share their experiences and participated in online team challenges, highlighting the importance of seeking help when tackling tasks. At school, they grew herbs, researched their vitamin and mineral content, and explored their health benefits through presentations and recipes. Finally, each school organized a local sports event “Moving together” — such as a run, walk, or competition—giving students the chance to learn about event planning and community engagement.
▶Impact
We achieved the following tangible results from the project: 1 - a project logo; 2 - website (Twinspace); 3 - “Stepping Up at YOUR School” - a shared methodology for taking on challenges with attached materials to download (badges, self-esteem questionnaires, examples of motivational materials made by students in international teams, presentations from the students’ research); 4 - an online file to download workshop materials for teachers from project meetings; 5 - a recipe book, 6 - a brochure about the herbs grown in school gardens; 7 - various questionnaires and surveys. We also achieved several intangible results: gaining knowledge about healthy lifestyles, enriching methodologies for using self-assessment plans, and discovering new ways for personal growth. The “Step Up Face the Challenge” project was intended to serve as a model for innovative and creative interventions in teaching and learning about healthy lifestyles within the curriculum, incorporating self-assessment techniques. It provided teachers with numerous opportunities for self-development and helped them stay current with the latest teaching methods in line with European Union standards.
