Burnout of Professionals and Parents with Children with Disabilities: Prevention, common challenges and mutually empowering methodologies and practices in Early Child Intervention Services
▶Summary
We applied for the Project to address the challenges faced by parents, professionals and organizations in the disability sector, particularly the serious issue of burnout. The project highlighted the need to enhance protective factors for families and Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) professionals while reducing burnout risks, which can lead to isolation and social exclusion. By empowering those responsible for the care and education of children with disabilities (CwD), we aimed to empower the children themselves. We focused on addressing the following needs: For Parents & Professionals: •Strengthen their emotional, social, parenting and professional skills •Identify, prevent burnout & enhance resilience •Improve cooperation & teamwork •Have access to high-quality learning opportunities For Organizations: •Adapt organizational structures and tools •Build connected and dedicated teams •Create a culture of resilience •Improve the quality of services offered Through Innovative Digital Tools: •Enhance digital skills & readiness •Ensure access to up-to-date knowledge and resources The ultimate goal was to provide CwD with better care and support, helping them reach their full potential and promoting their social inclusion.
▶Objectives
The Project involved 10 partners and 1 associated partner from 8 countries. Its goal was to ensure CwDs’ healthy development and social inclusion. It aimed to help parents & professionals overcome vulnerability, empower each other, cultivate relationships based on empathy and improve participation in all aspects of life. It aimed to promote digital transformation, provide tailored quality learning opportunities, improve organizational quality, build capacity and enable transformation. Its objectives included: • Develop a burnout screening inventory • Gain in-depth knowledge of professionals’ and parents’ with CwD needs and identify burnout risk factors • Develop Burnout FREE ECI Methodology to improve well-being, resilience and adult-child relationships • Create an Innovative Train the Trainers Burnout FREE ECI Program • Develop a digital ecosystem for the ECI field • Validate and certify the Burnout FREE ECI Program • Ensure sustainability of best practices, raise awareness, foster social inclusion and extend the project impact • Establish collaboration to promote synergy, networking, and capacity building, tackling joint challenges and promoting social inclusion and skill development for families with CwD & ECI professionals.
▶Activities
The overall strategy of Burnout FREE ECI Project was based on a synthetic plan of activities to achieve its aims. To ensure high quality objectives a PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Act) cycle process was applied and all activities correlated directly with the objectives and the results. The project activities were: •European & International Literature Review on Burnout affecting Professionals and Parents with CwD within the context of ECI Services. •A Needs Assessment survey related to burnout per Partner Organization & respective assessment tools regarding the identification of ECI professionals’ and parents’ with CwD needs. Data was collected from a sample of 227 professionals and 284 parents. These numbers have far exceeded the requirements of the proposal (110 professionals and 220 parents). •Workshop for professionals to work together, structure the Training Material content and the work division among partners, according to their expertise during TM2. •Development of Burnout Free ECI Training Material & Content for Professionals & Parents, covering the need for enriched knowledge on burnout prevention and treatment techniques and addressing the specific needs of professionals and parents. •3 Webinars (1 Webinar was planned according to the proposal) to structure the guidelines on how to test and try Burnout FREE ECI techniques during the Pilot phase in ECI settings. •Pilot Implementation in a minimum of 15 families from each ECI Organization Partner, for a seven-month period during ECI Sessions. •Design and development of E-Learning Game and authoring tool, giving Professionals and Parents an extra tool to deal with burnout and cope better with their personal and professional challenges. •Development of Certification Scheme for the certification of Curriculum & Training Material and Certification Scheme for Persons to enhance quality assurance in adult education, in correlation to EQF Level 5, ECVET and Standard ISO 17024. •4 Days training Activity (C1) of 37 professionals, leading to their certification (the estimated number in the proposal was 22 certified professionals). The professionals mastered the innovative Burnout FREE ECI methodology, acted as Train the Trainers of the Methodology and replicated the knowledge in an organizational, national and European level. •Development of Digital Toolkit with Library of re-usable OER and newly developed e-learning courses (webinars), enhancing digital readiness of participants, ensuring full access to open and flexible learning and inclusion for all, even in challenging circumstances. •Development of Replication Burnout Free ECI Methodology Guide, enabling the successful replication of the project results to organizations beyond the consortium. • 12 Workshops (10 workshops were planned according to the proposal) on Burnout FREE ECI methodology were organized in partners’ organizations, other organizations and members of EASPD to familiarize 225 parents and professionals (exceeded the requirements of the proposal, which were 10 workshops and approx. 200 persons) with the mutually empowering practices to prevent burnout. •Performance of Train the trainers’ activity "Summer School: BURNOUT FREE ECI", a 4-day training program designed to equip 33 professionals with the knowledge, skills and competences required to be “facilitators of change” in organizations beyond the consortium, according to demand. •Adaptation of 3 universities courses curriculum to incorporate the Burnout FREE ECI Methodology, adding value to the ECI field knowledge and enhancing the responsiveness of the research community to the societal needs. •Development of the Burnout FREE ECI Hub, as vibrant Burnout FREE ECI community, extending the project impact beyond its lifetime. •Realization of 4 Multiplier Events giving the opportunity to 340 persons (the estimated number in the proposal was 255 persons) to attend live and virtually, through the e-conference tools. •Application of internal evaluation tools and performance of external evaluation to assess the project outcomes & results. •Organization of TMs as participatory project management activities and cooperation processes to minimize risk factors and enhance the quality of the Project Results. •Incorporation of green practices when designing all project activities and adoption of alternative greener ways of implementation (Webinars, E-Multiplier Events, E-Conferences, Adaptation of the Universities’ curricula in hybrid format, e-leaflets, etc).
▶Impact
Overall the project led to an increased capacity of partner organizations to anticipate and welcome change, to synchronize with the opportunities and constraints of the digital transformation, proactively support professionals and build connected and united teams. The concrete outputs and results of our project were the following: • The website of the project, evolved into an empowering network and active community, incorporating the ‘ Burnout Free ECI Hub’. • The Report on Burnout (PrR1) including Literature Review and Needs Assessment Survey. • The Workshop ‘Burnout Free ECI Training Material & Content for Professionals and Parents’, held in TM2 in Croatia, focused on structuring the Burnout Free ECI Training Material. • The Burnout Free ECI Training Material & Content for Professionals & Parents (PrR2) covering the need for enriched knowledge on burnout prevention and treatment techniques. • The Methodology (PrR3) with Guidelines which were applied to ECI services during the pilot phase in each ECI Organization and Assessment tools. • Three Webinars on Pilot guidelines, which guided the Professionals through the Pilot Phase and the content of the Methodology Guide. The Webinars were performed by UTH, UNIZG, UBB, Omegatech and Amimoni. • The Report on the Burnout Free ECI Pilot (PrR3), including the results derived from piloting Burnout FREE ECI techniques in partner organizations. • E-learning Game (PrR4) consisting of free applications (for PC, iOS and android devices) including a mood quiz and multiple scenarios. It is accompanied by an authoring tool that allows development of new scenarios in various languages. • The Certification Scheme (PrR5), which led to Certification of Curriculum &Training Material and Certification of Persons, according to EQF Level 5, ECVET and Standard ISO 17024. • 4 Days training Activity (C1), which led to 37 Certified Burnout FREE ECI Professionals who acquired the required knowledge, skills and competences to perform Trainings/ Workshops/Webinars on Burnout FREE ECI Methodology and were equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills and key competences to apply Burnout FREE ECI practices and help other professionals in ECI or related services and parents with children with disabilities overcome challenges, improve their quality of life and consequently improve the quality of support, care and education offered to the child with disabilities. • The Digital Toolkit and the Replication Methodology (PrR6); The Digital toolkit includes an online training platform, e-learning courses (MOOC) and webinars and the Digital Educational material in OER format available in the E-learning Platform (E-library). The Replication Methodology enables the development of digital tools, of the methodology replication guide, hybrid learning opportunities from Universities, innovative approaches for addressing target groups, increasing the reach and impact of the project beyond ECI Organizations. • 12 Workshops on Burnout FREE ECI methodology, which were organized in partners’ organizations, other organizations and members of EASPD and familiarized more parents and professionals (225 persons) with the mutually empowering practices to prevent burnout. • Adaptation of scientific curricula from 3 Universities, in hybrid format, providing future professionals with knowledge, skills and key competences on the issue. These courses, offered by UTH, UBB, and UoZ, are expected to reach approximately 430 students annually (significantly more than the originally foreseen 50 students per university). The results and outcomes of the project benefited the broad community of ECI service providers as well as other Associations in the disability field. The quality assurance framework and impact measurement methodology used in the project were based on the Theory of change assessing the intermediate goals and the progress towards the desired impact and ultimate objectives and it was guaranteed through a sound management system. The project helped people live a better life and create a “muscle of resilience” during times of crisis. The partnership between parents and professionals had a positive impact on altering the society’s stereotypes on disability and encouraging child inclusion in society. As for the longer-term benefits, the project paved the way for the development of new areas of complementarity in the disability field aiming at longer term perspectives and upscaling collaborations for long lasting sustainable impact.
