One Step Forward

This project was born because our German partner and Collège de l'Europe in Ardres had Previously worked on a project on climate change and we wanted to carry on our partnership with new partners and make the project evolve. All partners working on the project think that raising awareness on that topic for the students is really important nowadays as our students are the future citizens who will take care of our planet. Moreover we also want our students to understand and live their European citizenship while meeting other young Europeans their age. The needs we have addressed, are several : some concrete needs like the need of reliable digital material to get in touch with each other and work together and being able to welcome comfortably our partners when they travelled to our rural school. There were also some more abstract needs : getting students aware of urgent goals to achieve concerning climate change and making them find solutions and act. We also needed our students to gain a European identity.

Our goals were : - to raise awareness on climate change - to get students more active as future citizens - to (re)motivate students at school in an active pedagogy project - to use digital tools in an easier way - to learn from other European students about their way of life

The open letter on the state of the ocean and solutions to take was the main goal as a concrete output. As well as the video with it, in the languages of the students involved and translated into English. Other outputs which have been created along the process are the logos, the posters (which were shown in the halls of the schools) and the audio-visual material created by students. Students have become more knowledgeable and aware of climate change and the importance of sustainable lifestyle therefore they have developed ability to debate on those topics with a critical viewpoint. Also they have spread this knowledge in their local area and this way they have increased their active citizen involvement. They have become conscious that they are able to express their position and opinion to the authorities. They are able to speak in a foreign language and to make a case and convince sometimes otherwise than with words (body, facial expressions). The impact of climate change becomes concrete and students become actors. We mustn’t forget cultural openness as another output because students were able to get into contact with foreigners and overpass apprehensions.
