Ariadne's thread of tourism
▶Summary
The project began in 2021, following the COVID-19 pandemic. The needs of the "travel and tourism" sector were vast, with travel agencies particularly hard hit by closures and emergency health measures. However, agency owners had already been facing significant challenges. The sector was in a critical state due to the technological revolution, which transformed customer purchasing habits, and regulatory fragmentation across Europe. Our goal was to provide support to agency owners and their trade union representatives to enhance their organizational and managerial skills, promoting creativity, flexibility, and organizational capacity in environments increasingly characterized by speed, complexity, and ambiguity. By early 2025, the sector seems to have moved past the pandemic crisis. However, challenges persist: regulatory fragmentation, technological disintermediation, programming difficulties, and the small size of agencies continue to limit their capacity for investment and innovation. In a changed world, it is essential to develop resilience, adaptability, market empathy, and the ability to make decisions based on data and new consumption habits to tackle risks and uncertainties.
▶Objectives
The "Ariadne's Thread of Tourism" was created to respond to the significant challenges that owners of travel and tourism agencies must face. The primary objective was to provide this category with the tools and skills needed to address the complexities of a sector increasingly marked by regulatory fragmentation and technological disintermediation, as well as the growing need for resilience and adaptability. Through the creation of educational and digital materials, the project also aims to promote good practices and share fundamental values such as solidarity, professionalism, humanity and social responsibility. The idea is to be able to provide the appropriate tools for professionals who aim for the quality and efficiency of their business. And not only that, the project also aims to strengthen the representation of the category in institutional contexts through collaboration between tourism associations and companies. By creating a model that supports the organizational and personal development of travel agency owners, the "Ariadne's Thread of Tourism" serves as a guide to navigate the complexities of the present and build a sustainable future in the travel & tourism sector.
▶Activities
Throughout the project, a series of activities were implemented in sequential and interconnected phases, all aimed at achieving the set objectives. The first step involved an in-depth analysis of the reference contexts in the partner countries, accompanied by data collection for each. These data were subsequently evaluated and organized into categories to allow for effective comparisons between the different national realities, highlighting common challenges and unique features. An important milestone was the mapping of travel agency owners associated with the federations of the participating countries, focusing on organizational and training aspects. A qualitative survey was then conducted to identify the needs, challenges, and priority areas of intervention among tourism workers. This survey also explored their willingness to grow professionally through the exchange of best practices with other European tourism organizations. The results of this survey were analyzed and used to develop a management and organizational model for travel and tourism businesses. This model focused both on transversal skills, such as flexibility and communication, and on specific competencies related to the use of new digital tools, which are essential for effective business and client management. The proposed tools included guides for self-assessment and strategies for enhancing and strengthening these skills. Another key activity was the creation of a professional training and development course, designed to provide participants with the identified priority skills and knowledge. Simultaneously, a multilingual, interactive, and responsive electronic platform was developed to facilitate the exchange of best practices, training, and communication among project participants. As an additional support tool, a manual was created, offering useful resources for professional and personal growth, as well as a compilation of best practices identified during the project. The platform underwent a testing phase to assess its effectiveness and usability, directly involving the beneficiaries. During the 36 months of the project, the results were disseminated through activities aimed at sharing the developed solutions and extending their impact to a wider audience. These activities represented an integrated process combining analysis, design, testing, and dissemination, aimed at delivering a concrete and sustainable contribution to the tourism sector.
▶Impact
The project achieved the following results: PR1 - Report on the state of the art of the tourism sector during the crisis in Italy, Greece, and Hungary. This report provides an in-depth analysis of the tourism sector in the three partner countries, highlighting the pandemic's impact and the emerging needs of operators. The comparison of different national contexts allowed the identification of gaps and opportunities, offering a comprehensive framework that served as the foundation for subsequent developments. PR2 - Fact-finding survey on the tourism sector. Through a qualitative survey, data were collected on the cognitive, behavioral, and operational skills of tourism workers, particularly travel agency owners and accommodation providers. This tool enabled the mapping of transversal and professional skills, offering beneficiaries a self-assessment process and increased awareness of their capabilities. PR3 - Online course "Tourism-Pro: Enhancing the Skills of Tourism Professionals". The online course, structured into four main modules, addresses topics such as soft skills, customer management, digital tools, and communication techniques. Available in multiple languages, the course offers practical and theoretical content enriched with interactive quizzes and downloadable resources. PR4 - New technologies for organizational management and sharing of best practices. The multilingual platform hosts all the project's training content, including reports, manuals, courses and audio files. Designed to be accessible and user-friendly, it enables flexible and personalized learning, adapting to users' needs. The platform was developed to promote professional growth and facilitate access to practical tools for innovation in the tourism sector. PR5 - Manual on Soft and Digital Skills for the Tourism Sector. The manual, complementary to the online course, provides a practical guide for developing transversal and digital skills, including exercises, concrete examples, and best practices. It is a valuable resource for improving the internal management of tourism businesses and optimizing customer relationship management.
