Inclusive Methodology for Technology Aimed at Learning and Enhancement of Storytelling
▶Summary
With digital multimedia products, children gain tools to enhance storytelling through psycho-pedagogical methodologies. The project aimed to harness the power of storytelling by focusing on the sensory experiences involved, which are essential for fostering social interaction. The use of inclusive technological tools, often unfamiliar to educators and teachers, required dedicated training paths to help them learn how to use and design these tools according to the specific needs of the children they support. The goal was to promote inclusive strategies that transform the educational environment and create more opportunities for interaction and communication for all children. I’M IN TALES project developed a ready-to-use methodology leveraging new technologies that integrate multisensory objects with digital reality to enhance children’s storytelling. Through a MOOC (www.eduopen.org), mainstream and special education teachers were trained in a methodology based on the Tangible User Interfaces (TUIs) paradigm. This hybrid approach enables interaction between users and digital interfaces via sensor-enhanced tangible objects, engaging all senses (touch, hearing, smell, taste) for a fully immersive learning experience.
▶Objectives
The I’M IN TALES Consortium connected a synergistic and competent network which reached the project aims of integrating under the same umbrella competences related to the multi-faceted nature of the problem. In brief, the objectives of the I’M IN TALES project were: • The development of an inclusive methodological framework to enhance storytelling of preschool- and school-aged children with and without special needs, through a TUI-based approach, directly involving the teachers (PR1) • The development of a simplified authoring tool for teachers and Open Educational Resources in the form of "augmented" narratives based on the predefined methodological framework(PR2) • The creation of an e-learning course for teachers in pre-primary and primary schools through the creation of a MOOC - Massive Open Online Courses(PR3) • To collect data and analyse the efficacy of I’M IN TALES co-created methodology in pre-primary and primary schools and ensure project sustainability and replication drawing up guidelines for the creation, implementation and quality evaluation of practices. ▶Activities
1. First scenarios prototypes co-created with teachers of schools involved in the project. A-priori knowledge on digital skills and TUI technology of teachers and specific need have been verified. An inclusive TUI-based methodological framework for storytelling for all children has been designed. 2. Tools development in the central part of the I’M IN TALES project: - a simplified authoring tool (PR2) and in parallel designed and delivered MOOC platform contents and then of the OERs by teachers (PR3). - After the first version of the authoring tool, retrofits are applied on the basis of observations coming from national workshops with special education teachers (E1 to E4). - The MOOC contents: an overall view of storytelling based approach, inclusive education and the integration of TUI. 3. Assessment of the impact of the I’M IN TALES tools: - application of the I’M IN TALES framework into the real field, application in pre-primary and primary schools, after the maturity of the TUI - exploitation and elaboration of guidelines and best practices for enhancing digital skills in teacher education for all children: ensuring the opportunity of a future re-application of the project in other sc
▶Impact
1. The project supported teachers’ professional growth by improving their ability to adapt, innovate, and effectively use digital tools. It emphasized creativity and collaboration through a co-design approach, with special education teachers creating OERs. This made early and primary education more inclusive and better suited to address the challenges of modern society, especially for children with disabilities. 2. I’M IN TALES had a direct impact on both teachers and students. Teachers participated in every phase of the project, gaining digital skills and integrating technology into educational activities. They created and applied OERs in school settings, enhancing their capacity to lead innovative, inclusive storytelling activities while fostering students' engagement and learning. 3. The project introduced a flexible, inclusive teaching approach centered on technology and the needs of children, contributing to higher-quality education across Europe. Additionally, it developed a simplified, free authoring tool for Windows, available on the project website and online stores, to further support teachers in creating engaging digital content.
