Digital Transformation, Industry 4.0 and Human Resources Management: Innovative skills to enhance HE students employability, flexibility and transversal capabilities
▶Summary
Digital technologies are transforming the lives of people, businesses and society. The lessons of the Covid-19 crisis show that Europe needs a seamless combination of real and virtual business contexts, leading to so-called integrated digital systems. What is needed is the integration of online devices and work tools, the digitalisation of workflows and multiple innovative production systems within a network of suppliers, together with the application of new activities and operating methods at different technical levels. The task of the DigiWork project was to contribute to research, reports, exchange of good practices, sectoral analysis and definition of the most innovative digital learning needs in order to bridge the gap between the requirements of the digital labour market and the skills acquired by students entering the labour market, through the development and implementation of appropriate curricula and/or courses.
▶Objectives
The project focused on new digital approaches to work needed in Europe, representing a true digital revolution in process and skills management. The aim was to improve existing national and local ecosystems by spreading innovation and a new digital transformation process. Another important objective is to provide services to universities to strengthen their innovation by offering curricula and services related to I4.0 opportunities. The DigiWork project supported activities to bridge the gap between European Higher Education (HE) system partners and partners in other European countries, combining the partners' experiences and taking into account all the detailed analyses to develop innovative modules to enable digitisation. Through DigiWork, the key competences needed to create the skilled workforce required by Industry 4.0 in a highly industrialised Europe have been identified.
▶Activities
Drawing on the experience and potential of the leader and partners in project implementation and management, solutions were applied to manage and implement project activities based on a proven, systematic and controlled approach that detailed each step. The project team knew what to do to complete the work on time, on budget and within the specific requirements of the target group. In particular: the needs of the target group were identified; a common 'language' was established; activities were managed (complete, accurate and reliable); a common methodological approach was adopted for effective delivery of results; - and conflicts were resolved easily and quickly. The DigiWork project consists of 4 Outputs. Each had a leader responsible for planning and implementing the outcomes. Detailed implementation plans for each Output were discussed and approved by the partners during the TPM. Evaluation and dissemination/application activities, for each Outcome were structured and jointly approved. The DigiWork project was managed according to the defined plan: A1 - Project management and coordination, including 5 international project meetings in Slovakia, Latvia, Bulgaria, Spain and Italy, Spain and Italy, supplemented by online meetings. A2 - Impact analysis and dissemination of digitisation gaps within RES1. Preliminary experience of 6 partners, detailed advice on the preparation of a specific DigiWork learning pathway and assessment tools. A3 - Report on innovative employability skills for university students and development of effective work-based approaches. A4 - Online training programme: development and delivery methodology, focusing on how to develop learning content, knowledge and skills assessment tools. A5 - Learning content, knowledge and skills assessment tools. The main objective related to the DigiWork training modules and multimedia products implemented. A6 - Implementation of the integrated DigiWork platform, including website, knowledge sharing area and learning management solutions; the platform will consist of 19 training modules, including text, images, collaboration and resource sharing, video and interactive materials. A7 - System implementation and content validation. Educational products have been published. A8 - Dissemination and exploitation. These are the partners' activities aimed at reaching key stakeholders and target groups. Five national conferences/workshops and a final conference in Italy were organised. A9 - Quality and risk management to ensure the quality of the activities and the expected results of DigiWork.
▶Impact
Project result no. 1 A research on innovative skills and best practices to enhance Higher Education students employability, flexibility and transversal capabilities and develop effective digital work based approaches. The research report on innovative skills and best practices for enhancing Higher Education students' employability, flexibility, and transversal skills was completed as planned. In addition, partner organisations carried out needs assessments, baseline surveys, and situational analyses to assess awareness, readiness, and adoption of digitalisation among civil servants, entrepreneurs, and manufacturers. After collecting and analysing data based on local research and interviews with stakeholders on the role of industrial policy and the digital transformation of SMEs, partners collaborated on identifying educational gaps and propose recommendations for integrating digital transformation into university curricula, focusing on key competences and learning needs. Each partner conducted surveys to understand digitalisation trends in SMEs and education. Project partners provided 100% positive evaluations on the developed outputs. This indicates high satisfaction and the successful development of resources that meet the needs of the project. As part of this output, the partners have produced: [1] a long version of the report (in English), [2] country reports from all partner countries (in English), [3] an abridged version of the report (in English) and translations into Polish, Czech, Bulgarian, Italian and Spanish. Project result no. 2 Online training curriculum: methodology of development and delivering is based on the most innovative user-centred approach, taking into account the core principles of training. The designed curriculum incorporates findings from scientific studies and preliminary mapping of existing knowledge in key project areas. Partner organisations engaged with their national networks for feedback on the sector needs, curriculum content, and project’s sustainability. Partners collected best practices for the digital transformation and implementation of industry 4.0, in particular, successful technological applications in workplaces and related digitalisation practices in public and private organisations. In addition, each project partner conducted individual expert interviews at the national level on the specific training path assigned to them. The interviews were conducted with researchers, directors, managers, software developers and system and design engineers in fields, such as IT, robotics, data analytics, 3D printing, technical universities. The DigiWork Online Training Methodology Guide is a comprehensive and innovative programme that can not only help users to better adapt to the dynamic changes in the field of training, but also actively involve different parties in the process of developing effective training programmes. It embraces personalisation, collaboration, practical application, knowledge inclusion and stakeholder engagement to provide a solid foundation for effective and modern online training. The methodology not only addresses current challenges but also sets new standards in digital education. The evolving landscape of online learning is entering a new phase. In recent years, In recent years, trends have focused mainly on technological aspects. However, the future towards a more personalised and tailored approach to education, training and development. In preparing this report, the project consortium undertook extensive research and analysis of the global e-learning market, its current trends and its prospects for the coming years. Data was collected from a variety of sources, including online content creation tools and learning platforms, official statistics and available expert articles. After an in-depth analysis of the collected data, the project partners agreed to dedicate this introduction to fast-changing trends that are having a significant impact on the education scene. The overview presented here addresses four key e-learning trend predictions for the next few years: 1) the ascendance of adaptive learning; 2) the enduring adoption of gamification; 3) the burgeoning use of virtual reality in education; and 4) the novel applications of data analytics. For further information about the project and the developed learning contents please visit the website: https://digiwork-project.eu/ Project result no. 3 Learning contents, workplace guidelines and skills assessment tools The learning materials were developed along with multimedia tutorial for participants, skills assessment tools, a map of competencies related to digitalization and management practices. Result 3 developed 19 modules in English. The modules are available on the DigiWork platform in English, Polish, Latvian, Slovak, Bulgarian, Italian, and Spanish. The modules are divided into 6 learning paths, each containing 3 to 6 courses: 1) Data; 2) Supply Chain Fundamentals; 3) How to Start from Scratch to Production 4.0; 4) Advanced Intelligent Manufacturing; 5) Industry 4.0: Benefits and Challenges; 6) Human Machine Interaction and Smart Computing Technologies. The partners developed e-learning programs and descriptions using an innovative approach to course descriptions based on design thinking and user-centered design practices. Instead of writing plain text about the content of a particular module and its purpose, the partners implemented the following sections: short information with buzzwords on [1] objectives and [2] effects of a given path, written in points; [3] main topics within a given module; [4] organizational info, such us type of the content included (text, graphics, video, etc.) or time needed to complete a given module; and [5] user’s characteristics in the form of “Participant’s Pains” and “Participant’s Gains.” This way V-S ensured that the learning materials have been developed in the practical manner. Each Partner developed their modules and made translations of all the 19 course which can be found on the platform already: https://digiwork-project.eu/all-courses/ Project result no. 4 Integrated online platform for learning, cooperation and resources sharing. The result is an innovative and integrated web platform called DigiWork. An effective portal that integrates website and an e-learning platform. The web platform is in English, but has also been translated into the native language of each of each project partner. The platform incorporates the best open solutions for content management systems, communication learning, knowledge sharing and participation, integrating them into a unique, easy-to-use into a unique, easy-to-use online solution. The DigiWork website is user friendly and easy to use. The DigiWork integrated online platform was developed based on the research from the previous project results. It was tested internally and externally with a total of 6 reports from external testers and 8 reports from internal testers. The results of the internal and external testing of the DigiWork online platform have been documented as part of Result 4. Based on the identified issues and points for improvement, the project partners made recommendations, which were consequently addressed and implemented. The testers provided comprehensive reports covering the entire user experience. The feedback is summarised in the next section. The output received 100% positive feedback from the internal evaluation.
