Up2DigiSchool - A viable pedagogical approach for digital school education based on the experience of Up2U

We applied for this project to address the urgent need for effective digital education tools and methodologies in secondary and vocational schools, particularly in response to the challenges highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic. While the Up2U project demonstrated the potential of digital learning platforms, it also revealed key obstacles faced by teachers, including difficulties in adapting digital tools to rigid curricula, challenges in tracking student progress, and a lack of technical support. The Up2DigiSchool project aimed to refine and expand upon the Up2U methodology, providing teachers with improved tools, pedagogical strategies, and training to integrate digital learning more effectively into their classrooms. By extending the community of schools involved and responding to newly identified needs, we sought to empower educators with sustainable digital solutions that enhance teaching and learning experiences across Europe.

By implementing this project, we aimed to improve digital education in Europe by enhancing schools' readiness for digital transformation. Our key objectives were to equip schools with better tools and strategies for developing students’ digital skills, ensuring they are prepared not only for emergencies like a pandemic but also for everyday learning with digital technologies. We also sought to empower teachers by increasing their confidence in using innovative, technology-based teaching methods. Additionally, we aimed to foster a strong community of educators, enabling them to share best practices, exchange learning scenarios, and benefit from international collaboration. Finally, we wanted to enhance the open-source Up2U platform with new features and services, making it an even more effective tool for digital education.

The project implementation involved a diverse range of activities aimed at maximising outreach and impact. Six multiplier events were organised, serving as focal points for disseminating project outcomes and insights. Additionally, a series of internal lectures and mini-conferences were conducted, fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration within the project community. To ensure widespread dissemination, project information was distributed to teachers through various channels, including mailing lists, dedicated events, and targeted social media groups.

The Up2DigiSchool project delivered five key outcomes aimed at enhancing digital education in secondary and vocational schools across Europe. First, we conducted a comparative analysis of online platforms and activities used in digital education since the onset of COVID-19. This provided valuable insights into best practices, challenges, and gaps in existing digital learning solutions, helping to inform the project’s approach. Second, we developed the Learning Scenarios Portal, which was integrated with the Up2U Learning Platform. This portal allows educators to share, access, and adapt digital teaching materials, fostering collaboration and the exchange of innovative pedagogical practices. A major outcome was the extension of the Up2U learning platform, incorporating new features that improve usability, support curriculum adaptation, and enhance student progress tracking. These updates made the platform more effective for teachers and students, ensuring a smoother transition to digital learning. To support teacher development, we created the “Digital School Ready Educator” training program, along with a structured curriculum. This program provided educators with practical skills and confidence to integrate digital tools into their teaching, ensuring long-term impact beyond the project. Finally, we launched a self-paced Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) titled “Approaches to Digital Learning”, offering teachers and education professionals an accessible way to develop their digital competencies. This course ensures that training materials remain available and scalable, reaching a broad audience even after the project’s completion.
