▶Objectives
Through the implementation of the AREOLA project, the primary objective was to develop cutting-edge digital training tools, including online theoretical materials and AR/VR simulations, tailored for PBF-LB operators in the aerospace industry to the focus of the implantation was take advantage of these new technologies and expand the capacity of educational materials in the field of AM, as well as to demonstrate the effectiveness of using these new technologies applied to the practical training of learners. By using these innovative tools we aimed to contribute for optimizing resources and increasing cost-effectiveness while maintaining the quality of training and facilitating access to training by all. Additionally, the intention was also to design and implement innovative blended learning paths supported by the newly developed training tools, providing flexible and personalized learning experiences for trainees. Ultimately, we wanted to contribute for improving competitiveness and facilitating the recovery of the aerospace sector by equipping workers through advanced training methods, digitalization of the IAMQS by providing XR tools and to provide recommendation to update blended learning guideline of IAMQS.
▶Activities
The AREOLA project run for 24 months-, completing its life—cycle on the 27th of February 2024, All project activities were completed as planned. In terms of project milestones, all ten milestones were achieved, as listed below: MS1 – Conduct interview to assess VR/ARs needs in PBF-LB Operator field. Verifiable Indicators (VI): 10 VET answers and 10 industry answers (the milestone was revised with the project consortium agreement, to include interviews instead of a survey.) MS2 – Identification of 42% of PBF-LB Operator curriculum to be deployed in a virtual AR/VR environment VI: Report on AR/VR analysis in AM training field MS3 – Development of online theoretical training tools VI: Traditional online training tools for PBF-LB Operator profile MS4 – Development of VR & AR tools VI: AR and VR training tools for PBF-LB Operator MS5 –Pilot Activities to test AREOLA training tools VI: 20 participants per pilot activity per VET provider MS6 – National Virtual Roundtables VI: 20 participants per roundtable MS7 – Re-iteration of the content developed based on pilot activities feedback VI: Report on the adjustment of training guidelines to Blended learning teaching strategy MS8 – Development of Blended Learning Guideline for PBF-LB operators VI: Update of existing IAMQS PBF-LB training Guideline with innovative Blended learning path MS9 – EU Conference VI: 50 participants in the conference MS10 – National Seminars VI: 15 participants per event AREOLA Project Results (PRs) and respective activities/tasks have been organized in six project activities (A) types, which were implemented by the consortium, namely: A1 – Research and Analysis (PR1 and PR4) A2 – Development of the Metal AM PBF-LB Operator training tools and blended learning guideline (PR2,3, 5) A3 – Learning Activities (PR4 and C1) A4 – Dissemination & Exploitation A5 – Quality Assurance and Evaluation A6 – Project Management Among these overall activities, A4 to A5 and A6 were continuous activities covered by the Project Management and Implementation. For the remaining activities more detail was provided during the report in project results section. To give an overview, the completed activities were shortly described below; A1 –Research and Analysis- The research and analysis activities associated with PR1 and PR4 provided valuable insights for the AREOLA project. PR1 focused on identifying and validating the needs of industrial stakeholders and training providers in the aerospace sector regarding the adoption of XR tools in training for Metal AM PBF-LB operators. This involved conducting 20 interviews across eight countries, which informed stakeholders about the project and deepened relationships within the industry. Insights from PR1 guided the development of training materials and XR tools in subsequent phases, ensuring alignment with industry requirements. PR4 focused on comparing different learning and teaching methods and testing developed materials through pilot courses organized in partner countries (Portugal, Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom). The theoretical training materials were tested online and hybrid, receiving positive feedback from participants across various sectors. The practical training materials were tested in subsequent phases, with participants expressing satisfaction and recommending the course to others. Feedback from participants was used to improve the materials, and iterative adjustments were made throughout the process. The aim of the pilots was to test and validate XR tools with end users and compare hands-on learning with XR tools in education. The feedback received helped refine the materials and provided valuable insights for future implementations. A2- Development of the Metal AM PBF-LB Operator training tools and blended learning guideline; The AREOLA project encompassed several activities aimed at developing training tools and a blended learning guideline for Metal AM PBF-LB operators. In PR2, theoretical materials were developed based on IAMQS guidelines, including slides, teaching notes, case studies, a training manual, lesson plans, and assessment questions. These materials were translated into partner languages to enhance accessibility. PR3 focused on practical modules, involving the selection and development of XR training scenarios, creation of a database of practical scenarios, and development of AR/VR simulation tools. The practical scenarios covered various operations relevant to aerospace manufacturing. PR5 produced a blended learning guideline to integrate project results into European training in AM, offering recommendations for implementing blended learning methodologies. Overall, the project aimed to enhance training methods for AM operators and support the aerospace sector's workforce development. A3- Learning Activities-Capacitation of VET Trainers/Expert in the field of AM on the use of AREOLA results: The capacity building session facilitated the sharing of experiences and best practices among the partners. This exchange of knowledge allowed them to improve their training methodologies and analyze the developed materials more effectively. Furthermore, the capacity building session informed trainers from partner organizations on how to use XR technologies in training. In addition, trainers had the opportunity to experiment with these tools and the content developed with them. During the Learning activity, staff from partner organizations extended their knowledge of PBF-LB systems through facility visits and discussions while overviewing theoretical materials. Additionally, the partners learned about the AR/VR/XR tools in terms of both their technical usage and integration into a training program. The training materials were developed in the AREOLA project underwent a trial training during the 'Train the Trainer' capacity-building activity (C1), where partners provided feedback and suggestions for their improvement. The materials were revised based on this feedback and prepared for the actual pilot training. The capacitation session also aimed to ensure that the trainers are fully aware and capacitated to implement the national pilot trainings. A4- Dissemination and Exploitation activities; A dissemination plan was developed, which includes an action plan, descriptors, timeframe, as well as transferability of project results to other European countries and stakeholders to be involved in the activities conducted by partners under this dissemination plan. The plan was a useful guide for AREOLA project partners in conducting dissemination and exploitation actions, at both national and European level. During the project life cycle, from 28th of February 2022 and 27th of February 2024, a total of 121 dissemination activities were conducted among partners, directly reaching approximately 4000 individuals. The AREOLA project presentations resulted from partners' institutional activities or their participation in international and national events. As an example, the AREOLA project was introduced to nearly 3000 stakeholders from the industrial sector. The AREOLA project was also presented to nearly 900 stakeholders in the education sector. The project outcomes have been effectively communicated through various channels, including partner institutional communication tools and AREOLA communication tools (such as 2 flyers, press release, 4 e-newsletters, project video, logo, website and social media). The project maintains a dedicated webpage and a LinkedIn social media page. During the project lifetime, the website hit the 536 users and more than 4,400 page views. The website attracted users from various European countries, with USA, Portugal and UK being the most prominent. The website serves as a valuable resource, offering information, utilities, and contact details related to the partnership. The LinkedIn social media page, primarily contributed to attracts representatives from industry, higher education institutions, and research and technology centers. Its purpose is to engage with individuals outside the partnership network by sharing news and achievements from the AREOLA project. The page has garnered 221 followers and 8038 post impressions, since the beginning of the project. This growth can be attributed to the concerted efforts of all partners, who have adopted a more proactive approach to social media engagement. In addition, an exploitation plan was prepared by EWF with the contribution of the partners. According to this plan, the AREOLA project results will be sustained by presenting AREOLA results on different platforms such as Tech2Change fair (in Portugal), Smart Manufacturing Summit (in Japan), integrating AREOLA training materials into partners' training offers (i.e. LAK, EOS and MTC) and keeping the project website alive by the 2027, so almost three years after the project ends. A5 - Quality Assurance and Evaluation activities; The objective of these activities was to monitor the project's progress and ensure the delivery of high-quality results. Several evaluation tools, including Transnational Project Meetings (TPM), PRs, Train the Trainer, annual evaluation, pilot evaluation questionnaires and multiplier events’ questionnaires were developed collaboratively by the Quality Assurance (QA) and Evaluation manager in conjunction with the remaining project partners. A QA and evaluation report was generated including the evaluations and emphasizes their impact on improving subsequent activities since the beginning of the project (see the final Quality assurance and evaluation report). Through the implementation of various evaluation tools and methodologies, the consortium successfully monitored the project's development, identified areas for improvement, and proactively mitigated risks by different evaluation tools such as PR evaluation, TPM evaluation, C1 evaluation and so on. The findings and recommendations derived from these evaluations have significantly contributed to enhancing subsequent activities, ensuring the delivery of high-quality results. For instance, the TPM3 result was presented in the monthly meeting to be able to improve the deficiency for the next meeting. Another example, after the intermediate evaluation results, the main project documentation platform SharePoint was re-organized. In this way, partners were able to easily distinguish between old versions and new versions and access the latest versions of the files more easily and do not lose time to try to find a file or material. By continually refining the project's approach, the consortium remains committed to achieving its objectives and maximizing overall success. A6 – Project Management; As coordinator, FAN carried out the overall project management in closed collaboration with the remaining partners. The following activities have been carried out; •creation of the project management dossier in the common consortium document management and storage system •creation of Erasmus + financial & administrative guidelines, documents and templates •conduction of five meetings TPM1 (in Spain, hosted by IDONIAL), TPM2 (in Portugal, hosted by FAN), TPM3 (in UK, hosted by MTC), TPM4 (in Germany, hosted by EOS), TPM5 (in Portugal, hosted by EWF) and online monthly meetings •preparation of meeting outcomes (agenda, minutes, action list and attendance list) •communication with NA •elaboration interim reports to maintain and monitor of partners’ budget • implementation project’s work plan based on the Gantt chart • elaboration of final report of the project •reporting financial situations, final results, and overall impact of the project. During the project life cycle, activities were performed to accomplish the objectives of the AREOLA project. In line with the Gantt chart and the given budget, the committed consortium endeavors to ensure that the optimum level is achieved.
