Crossborder Journalism Campus

Crossborder collaborative journalism is a competence that journalism educations need to provide their students with, in order to meet demand in the industry. An informed public is essential in democracies and the content of such information needs to transcend national borders. Journalism students also need to learn more about the EU and its institutions in order to be able to cover those topics. To do this we need to build partnerships and networks between journalism educations in different countries.

With the CJC project we wanted to develop a pilot collaboration model to teach cross border collaborative journalism. The model enriches existing curricula with European and collaborative competences while at the same time fully respecting existing structures. We chose a flexible model, as it will be immediately applicable to other journalism educations without the need to adapt, integrate and nationally accredit new curricula.

A model for cross-border collaborations between universities in different countries that can be applied by other educations. 47 publications in media outlets such as MDR, ARD, Spiegel and Die Zeit (Germany), Le Monde and Mediapart (France), Svenska Dagbladet and Göteborgs-Posten (Sweden) and EUobserver (Belgium). The first year (2022/23) the overall topic was The European Green Deal, the second year (2023/24) the overall topic was Labour and Migration. A website showcasing the project, the students' publications and sharing the Crossborder Journalism Campus guidebook for networked cross-border collaborations in higher education, suggested teaching material and reading lists. Multiple publications by the involved lecturers describing the project and sharing material and experiences, published in academic journals and as chapters in handbooks. We have also disseminated the results from the CJC project in conferences for journalism professionals as well as for journalism educators.
