Formation of Critical Thinking and Media Literacy as Protection Against Media Manipulation, Misinformation and Fake News
▶Summary
The team applied for this project because it aimed to address the pressing need for university students and educators to develop critical thinking (CT) and media literacy (ML) skills, which are essential for navigating the complex and often misleading information landscape in today's digital world. By enhancing the ability to discern true from fake information, the project could significantly improve academic, professional, and personal decision-making. Additionally, the team was motivated by the potential to help students and educators gain the skills necessary to become active, informed citizens of the EU, capable of shaping the future in a democratic and responsible way. The needs addressed by this project were: - Educators required training in CT&ML to tackle specific challenges in teaching and learning. This included helping students acquire and consolidate skills that are crucial for academic success, as well as personal and professional growth. Educators needed tools to better guide students in evaluating information and fostering more effective learning outcomes too. - Students needed to develop CT skills that can aid them in making informed decisions, discerning fake from real news, and addressing changes in their lives.
▶Objectives
The project aimed to address critical educational needs for university students and educators. Key objectives included: - Equipping students with CT skills to improve their academic, personal, and professional lives, helping them make informed decisions and evaluate information effectively. - Improving educators' teaching competencies in CT to better guide students in developing these essential skills. - Developing students' media literacy skills to assess online information, recognize trustworthy sources, and combat misinformation. - Enhancing intercultural competencies and fostering greater understanding among participants from different cultural backgrounds. - Improving English language skills for better communication in the international context of the project. - Promoting cultural exchange between project partners to enrich learning experiences. - Strengthening the European dimension of education by fostering collaboration across European institutions. To achieve the goals, we produced: - A teaching manual for lecturers on teaching CT&ML. - An open virtual platform with free study materials and interactive tools. - A syllabus for a university course on CT&ML compendium of resources. - A CT&ML compendium.
▶Impact
The concrete outputs and other results of our project included: 1. Open Virtual Platform (OVP) was made freely accessible to all users, enabling a digital space for learning and collaboration. 2.Teachers' Manual provided educators with guidance on using the OVP effectively for teaching purposes. 3. The Syllabus and Course Materials for CT&ML laid the foundation for the development of the course curriculum. 4. University teachers gained knowledge in: - Teacher training on the OVP focused on using the platform for innovative teaching. - Teacher training on CT&ML methodology aimed at how to use the course. 5. The CT&ML Compendium provided a comprehensive resource on the course content. 6. The Learning Mobility Program for Students piloted the Critical Thinking and Media Literacy course, allowing students to engage with the course content in an international setting and gain insight into assessing the online data, fake news, identifying trustful sources, making well-informed decisions.. The team achieved broader results such as proportional distribution of tasks according to partners' expertise, equal participation, effective dissemination brought about by the efforts of all partners, cultural exchange as added value.
