Objectives

The GREEN SESAME project pursued several objectives that correspond to the needs of the partner countries and the priorities of Erasmus+. First, we identified cultural, personal and social factors that shape environmentally friendly behaviour and created a matrix to adapt measures in a culturally sensitive way. Secondly, we developed a school-wide approach to Positive Behaviour Support (SW-PBS) specifically tailored to sustainability-oriented behaviour. An app-based, gamified system was designed to motivate pupils on several levels. Thirdly, we designed a teacher training programme that teaches skills for applying the new concept in different cultural contexts. Finally, we piloted and evaluated the approach in all partner countries. In doing so, we examined its effects on environmentally friendly behaviour, contact with nature and the reduction of external behavioural problems. The results were used to improve and ensure the effectiveness of the concept.

Activities

The project carried out a variety of activities to promote sustainable behaviour and well-being among students at schools in Italy, Germany, Portugal and Spain. Initial research included secondary research, focus groups with 64 students and interviews with 27 teachers and experts to identify relevant environmentally friendly behaviours using the GreenComp framework. Based on this, the Green Sesame model was developed, which integrates the SW-PBS approach to promoting environmental responsibility and mental health for the first time. The partners jointly designed and developed a multilingual app with information on ecological footprints, tips for a sustainable lifestyle and interactive challenges. The piloting phase involved 618 students and 24 teachers from 16 schools, supported by training for educators and pre- and post-evaluations to analyse the impact. Dissemination activities included over 10 Green Sesame Days, scientific conferences, university events and EU-wide platforms such as EPALE.
