Arctic Academy for Social and Environmental Leadership

Climate change poses the greatest global challenge of our time, with the Arctic experiencing its most immediate and severe effects. Rising temperatures, melting sea ice, and shifting ecosystems are transforming the region and its communities. To address these urgent issues, there is a need to build a new generation of Arctic leaders—young scientists, academics, and policymakers—equipped to understand and respond to the region’s complex challenges and opportunities. The Arctic Academy for Social and Environmental Leadership (ARCADE) was created to meet this need. Through an intensive, multidisciplinary programme hosted in Norway, Iceland, and Greenland, twelve graduate students engaged in fieldwork, leadership training, and policy development exercises. The project fostered cooperation among Arctic universities and created a sustainable network of future practitioners. To expand access, ARCADE produced an open-access Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on the edX platform, sharing innovative teaching materials with learners worldwide. The project strengthened interdisciplinary collaboration, trained students to translate research into policy advice, and advanced informed, sustainable leadership for the Arctic’s future.

The ARCADE project aimed to build a new generation of Arctic leaders equipped to address the region’s accelerating environmental and social challenges. Its objectives were threefold: first, to motivate students from diverse academic backgrounds to gain a deeper and more holistic understanding of the Arctic’s complex realities and their socio-political implications at both local and global levels; second, to train participants to translate academic research into practical policy advice, fostering informed decision-making and public dialogue; and third, to strengthen cooperation among partner universities in Iceland, Norway, and Greenland, promoting interdisciplinary research and teaching across the Arctic. To extend the project’s long-term impact, ARCADE developed an open-access Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), “Social and Environmental Leadership in the Arctic,” on the edX platform, ensuring that the programme’s innovative teaching materials and leadership training remain freely accessible to learners worldwide beyond the project’s lifetime.

The ARCADE project implemented two ten-month multidisciplinary programmes at the graduate level, combining field-based learning, leadership training, and policy engagement. Each programme featured three intensive study weeks hosted in Norway, Iceland, and Greenland, focusing on themes such as climate change impacts, Arctic governance and security, sustainable development, community resilience, and green energy transitions. Students participated in field trips to Arctic communities and research sites, gaining first-hand experience of local adaptation to environmental change. Between the intensive sessions, students attended online seminars and leadership workshops on topics such as science communication, policy brief writing, and the role of research in decision-making. The consortium also organised two dissemination events at the Arctic Circle Assembly in Reykjavík, where students presented their projects to international experts. Finally, an open-access Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), “Social and Environmental Leadership in the Arctic,” was launched on edX in June 2025 to share the programme’s outcomes globally.

The ARCADE project produced significant and lasting results in Arctic education, research, and policy engagement. Through its two ten-month multidisciplinary programmes, ARCADE trained 24 graduate students from across the Arctic and beyond, building a network of emerging experts on Arctic governance, sustainability, and climate resilience. The programme successfully bridged the gap between academia and policy, training students to translate scientific knowledge into policy briefs and public communication. ARCADE increased the visibility of Arctic studies through international dissemination and the launching of a MOOC (edX) reaching 34+ million learners worldwide. So far students from 24 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and North America have finalized the edX course. Expanding access to high-quality education on Arctic issues and signalling global interest in the region’s future.
