Objectives

Motivation is a key to writing development. Students who are motivated for writing are more easily engaged and thereby learn more from these activities. Writers in school are, however, often lacking authentic readers. AILIT will increase students' motivation for literacy, and facilitate teachers' scaffolding of literacy activities by building and implementing an AI-driven game platform scaffolding students' writing and matching students’ texts to student readers in other schools and countries.

Activities

We will design digital scaffolding material for students and digital guidance material helping teachers scaffold writing. We will design algorithms facilitating international circulation of student texts (recommender systems, automatic text analysis and machine translation). We will build a prototype platform where this material and these algorithms can be implemented and tested. Finally, we will disseminate the results both locally, nationally and internationally.

Impact

The main result of the project will be a usable prototype of an evidence-based platform scaffolding students' (age = 8-11) writing and matching their texts to authentic readers. The prototype will function as pivot point for didactical explorations in the participating institutions’ teacher training programs, preparing the ground for a sound process towards a fully operational open source platform usable by all teachers and students across European countries.
