ā–¶Objectives

The AVIONIC project aimed to improve the quality, innovation and labour-market relevance of higher education in aviation by modernising study programmes and strengthening cooperation between universities and industry. Its purpose was to ensure that students and professionals acquire the competences needed for the digital and sustainable transformation of the air transport sector. The project pursued four specific objectives: • to equip learners with digital, green and interdisciplinary skills required by emerging aviation occupations; • to promote innovative and interactive teaching methods, including online, blended and simulation-based learning; • to develop digital tools and an international learning platform supporting flexible, collaborative and industry-aligned education; • to reinforce partnerships between higher education institutions, VET providers and aviation stakeholders to ensure that curricula reflect evolving professional needs.

ā–¶Activities

Over three years, the AVIONIC consortium implemented a coherent set of activities structured into five work packages. The project began with two parallel research processes: an analysis of labour market trends, emerging occupations and required qualifications in aviation and a review of innovative teaching methods and digital tools. Building on these findings, partners jointly redesigned curricula in ten study programmes and updated sixty courses by integrating new digital, green and interdisciplinary competences. A major achievement was the development of the AVIONIC Learn platform, including interactive courses, operational scenarios, simulations and assessment tools supporting online, blended and international learning. All outputs were tested with students, teachers and industry stakeholders. The project also carried out extensive dissemination through workshops, conferences, publications and a dedicated website, ensuring strong visibility and stakeholder engagement. Throughout implementation, regular monitoring, quality assurance and effective coordination ensured timely progress and alignment with project objectives.

ā–¶Impact

The AVIONIC project delivered a set of concrete outputs that strengthened the quality, relevance and innovation of aviation education. It produced two major analytical reports: one on emerging occupations and qualification needs linked to digitalisation and sustainability, and another on best practices in innovative and digital teaching methods. Based on these findings, partners updated the learning outcomes and curricula of ten study programmes and sixty courses, integrating digital, green and interdisciplinary competences. A key result was the creation of the AVIONIC Learn platform, offering interactive courses, operational scenarios, simulations, quizzes and digital learning resources. The platform supports online and blended teaching and enables international collaboration between students and teachers. The project also delivered extensive dissemination through workshops, conferences, publications and an open-access website, ensuring broad reach among academic and industry stakeholders. Beyond its tangible outputs, AVIONIC contributed to a more skilled and adaptable aviation workforce and reinforced long-term cooperation between higher education institutions and the air transport sector.
