Summary

NewFuture was conceived in response to the growing psychological and social challenges faced by refugees and migrants arriving in Europe. Many individuals come from war-torn regions, having endured violence, displacement and loss. Upon arrival, they are confronted with language barriers, uncertainty about their future and limited access to mental-health and integration services. At the same time, professionals and volunteers who support them — educators, VET trainers, counsellors and community leaders — often lack structured, trauma-informed tools to recognise symptoms of stress, trauma and burnout. This lack of preparedness creates a gap between the emotional needs of refugees and tcapacities of those who work with them. NewFuture was designed to bridge this gap by combining educational and psychosocial dimensions of integration. The project’s rationale was grounded in the belief that integration cannot be achieved without mental wellbeing and empathy. The project thus addressed an urgent European priority: to build inclusive, trauma-sensitive education systems capable of empowering both refugees and the professionals who accompany them

Objectives

NewFuture aimed to empower educators, VET professionals, and community leaders to support refugees’ mental wellbeing through practical, inclusive, and evidence-based approaches. Its specific goals were to: Develop innovative, easy-to-use resources that raise awareness about trauma, adaptation challenges, stigma, and mental health. Equip professionals and volunteers with tools to identify, respond to, and refer individuals experiencing distress. Strengthen cooperation among VET providers, NGOs, and community stakeholders working with refugees. Promote inclusion and integration through digital, multilingual, and open-access materials. Ensure sustainability and visibility of project results beyond its lifetime through an active dissemination strategy, a multilingual website, and online learning tools.

Activities

The project was implemented over 24 months, structured around 3 major Project Results (PRs) and a comprehensive dissemination and management framework. Under PR1 – Training Kit for VET Professionals, partners developed 8 interconnected components: a needs analysis, a state-of-the-art review, a collection of best practices, a training methodology, a theoretical handbook, ready-to-use PPTs, a toolbox of exercises and an introductory video summarising key messages. These materials were tested and refined through partner feedback and piloting with educators. PR2 – Practical Guide for Volunteers and Community Leaders included 3 parts: a Best Practice and Benchmarking Report comparing approaches across partner countries, Practical Guide itself, providing trauma-informed, accessible guidance for fieldwork, and a Podcast on supporting themental-wellbeing of refugees. PR3 – Animated Videos produced 8 standard and 4 simplified-language versions, allowing wider accessibility for refugees with different linguistic backgrounds. Implementation was supported by modern management tools, such as the AdminTool platform, ensuring transparency and efficient reporting. Dissemination activities included newsletters, project presentations at major even

Impact

NewFuture produced a comprehensive portfolio to promote trauma-informed education, mental wellbeing and inclusion among refugees and migrants. PR1 – Training Kit for VET Professionals delivered 8 components combining research, methodology and ready-to-use pedagogical materials that can be directly integrated into VET and adult learning. The kit equips educators to identify early signs of psychological distress, foster resilience and create inclusive environments. PR2 – Practical Guide for Volunteers and Community Leaders offers an evidence-based manual complemented by a Benchmarking Report and a Podcast, providing practical guidance for grassroots actors supporting refugees. PR3 – Animated Videos visualise emotional and psychological challenges such as trauma, social isolation, and cultural adaptation, providing an innovative, accessible resource for awareness-raising and training. The project built a sustainable multilingual online platform (www.newfuture-project.eu) hosting all outputs, newsletters, and dissemination materials. Hybrid multiplier events, focus groups, workshops and the final conference created an active network of educators, volunteers and decision-makers committed to refugee mental health.
