▶Objectives
With the implementation of the project, our goal was to enable our students to develop their intercultural competence as well as their key competencies and soft skills in a sustainable way. At the center was the personal exchange with peers from Finland to promote mutual understanding, tolerance, and openness. Through direct collaboration and the comparison of each other's living environments, cultural differences were to be experienced not as barriers but as enrichment. Another central concern was to strengthen foreign language skills, especially in English. Additionally, we wanted to increase the motivation of our students from a rural background to embrace new experiences and reflect on their own prejudices. In the long term, the project aimed to establish a regular student exchange that would enrich the school community beyond the project period. Experiencing international understanding hands-on should empower the young people to actively contribute to a peaceful and diverse Europe.
▶Activities
Within the framework of our Erasmus+ project, the student exchange between Mittelschule Salzachtal and Korpilahden yhtenäiskoulu in Finland was successfully reactivated. The central goal was to promote intercultural competences, tolerance, openness, and foreign language skills. The focus was on personal encounters between young people from both countries, especially from a rural region with little experience abroad and initial hesitation towards international projects. A key element was the joint creation of a bilingual cookbook featuring Finnish and German recipes, which was translated into English. During the exchange, participants engaged in a variety of activities: in Finland, team-building games, kayaking, Finnish baseball, day trips, and living with host families were central. During the return visit in Germany, the group visited a salt mine, tasted regional specialties, and experienced nature through hikes. The intensive interaction helped to reduce prejudices, build friendships, and strengthen the sense of a peaceful, united Europe. The project fostered lasting motivation and openness throughout the entire school community.
▶Impact
A key outcome of our project was the joint creation of a bilingual German-Finnish cookbook, in which the students collected, cooked, and translated typical local recipes into English. This creative collaboration was accompanied by exchange visits in both countries, where personal encounters, team activities such as kayaking, and day trips fostered intercultural understanding. Furthermore, new friendships were formed, awareness of the European community was strengthened, and important soft skills such as communication and empathy were developed. The project enhanced the openness of the entire school community toward international cooperation and motivated further young people to participate in European activities.
