Objectives

Our project was conceived to address a critical gap in European sustainability education. We identified that biomimicry is often inaccessible to professionals in the Mediterranean region due to high costs, dispersed expertise, and a lack of standardized, practical training. Therefore, our core mission was to democratize biomimicry knowledge and equip a new generation of innovators with the tools to learn from nature. Our main objectives were: Develop a Spanish-Italian partnership focused on accessible biomimicry training. Exchange knowledge and insights of the field among the working group, “cross-polinate” and learn from others achievements and mistakes. Furnish European professionals with tools to innovate for environmental sustainability, reducing the barrier-to-entry for learning biomimicry, especially in the Mediterranean region. Standardize and structure biomimicry education including practical, business-oriented examples of biomimicry inventions. Enhance the practical aspect of training in nature-inspired innovation to ensure applicability for up-skilling learners. In summary, these goals aimed to make biomimicry more accessible, more applicable to professional contexts, and more impactful in promoting sustainable innovation.

Activities

The project was executed through four sequential Work Packages that transformed collaboration into a tangible educational platform. WP1 (Project Management) provided the operational backbone, ensuring smooth execution through continuous coordination, strategic advisory board meetings, and regular full-team check-ins, both online and in-person. WP2 (Knowledge Transfer) built our foundation. Through two intensive in-person weekends in Granada, collaborative exercises (Theory of Change, Hero's Journey), and expert interviews, we synthesized over 100 key insights into the state of biomimicry education. WP3 (Framework Development) was the core creative phase. Guided by an Educational Board, activities like the "Understand Opportunity" workshop and a Framework Weekend enabled us to design, test, and finalize our main outputs: the interactive BioTable and practical Teaching Toolkits. WP4 (Dissemination & Pilots) ensured impact. We built a strong online presence and conducted pop-up interventions (webinars, workshops, training events) to pilot the framework with professionals, validating and refining the tools for public use. This structured approach ensured the efficient co-creation of standardized, accessible biomimicry resources.

Impact

- Established a strong Spanish-Italian partnership (Planet, ESADA, Biomimicry Granada) with regular exchanges and future collaboration potential. - Curated 100+ structured insights on biomimicry from expert knowledge exchanges to inspire practitioners. - Organized 3 networking events in Granada (ESADA and Alhambra gardens) with around 30 participants in total. - Held a week-long workshop in Nantes where students and teachers used the BioTable of natural strategies to design final projects. - Hosted two congresses in Granada, Green 2023 and Green 2024, engaging over 100 Mediterranean stakeholders. - Delivered a 3-day training “Biomimicry 101” for 20 international professionals to test educational content and gather feedback. - Ran the webinar “Biomimicry in Action” with over 80 participants, showcasing project results. - Created the BCF webpage, an open-access platform presenting the team, activities, and resources for professionals to use in their own workshops.
