Validation and transparency of Barista training Skills

The BARISTA project emerged from a growing need to harmonise, modernise, and professionalise barista skills across Europe. While the coffee sector is evolving rapidly, the skills of professionals remain uneven from one country to another, and no common framework exists to validate or make these skills visible. The partners identified a lack of structured programmes, innovative pedagogical tools, accessible digital resources, and transnational training opportunities. The project also addressed the strong demand from tourism and hospitality employers for a better-trained workforce capable of delivering a high-quality coffee experience and contributing to tourism attractiveness. Finally, BARISTA aimed to enhance skills transparency, support professional mobility, and promote an entrepreneurial mindset within a rapidly expanding sector.

The BARISTA project’s main objective was to improve the transparency, validation, and recognition of barista skills, while modernising existing training approaches. It sought to create an innovative learning framework combining theory, practice, and digital tools. The partners aimed to develop a comprehensive training programme (theoretical and practical modules), produce high-quality pedagogical materials, train educators able to transfer these skills, and create a digital learning platform facilitating access to the training content. The project also aimed to strengthen European cooperation in the hospitality-tourism sector, improve learners’ employability, stimulate pedagogical innovation, and contribute to a more professional, coherent, and sustainable coffee experience across Europe.

The partners developed two training curricula (theoretical and practical), as well as pedagogical training materials for VET learners, VET centres, and professionals in the coffee sector. In addition, a digital learning platform was designed to centralise modules, videos, quizzes, and interactive resources, making it easier for learners to access tools and engage in autonomous learning. A policy-oriented handbook on sustainable tourism in the coffee sector was also produced to support the development of public policies and strategies promoting sustainability and the barista profession. Two blended mobilities were organised in Türkiye and Italy, training a total of 50 participants (junior baristas, senior baristas, café managers, roasters, individuals interested in becoming baristas, and VET trainers). Six multiplier events were held at the end of the project to disseminate the results in each partner country.

The BARISTA project produced 7 concrete results: 2 European curricula covering theory and practice 1 pedagogical training material developed around 6 learning units 2 transnational training mobilities, strengthening the skills of 50 participants (junior baristas, senior baristas, restaurant managers, roasters, aspiring baristas, VET trainers, etc.) 1 digital learning platform, multilingual and freely accessible to learners 1 sustainable tourism handbook for policymakers and baristas, focusing on public policies and sustainable tourism strategies in the coffee sector 6 multiplier events, enabling dissemination to professionals, trainers, students, and tourism-related organisations The project improved learners’ skills, supported pedagogical innovation, strengthened cooperation among professionals, and contributed to better service quality in the coffee sector.
