▶Objectives
The primary goal of this project is to cultivate critical thinking and foster a deeper understanding of historical conflicts while promoting values of peace-building and reconciliation. Through visits to World War I and II sites and memorials in Belgium and Germany, students reflect on the origins, progression, and aftermath of conflicts. Emphasis is placed on strategies to prevent conflicts, methods of conflict resolution, and the importance of collective memory for shaping a a shared future.
▶Activities
The students will engage in a range of activities centred around the key topic "Conflict". This includes visits to historical sites of both World Wars in Flanders and Frankfurt, guided tours, the reflection on memorials and the culture of remembrance, and discussions about present-day conflicts and the nature of reconciliation. The students will join in preparatory and follow-up group work on invididual topics that they will present to the exchange group and the wider school communities.
▶Impact
Expected results include a deeper understanding of origins, progression, and aftermath of large-scale conflicts, appreciation for peace-building, enhanced critical thinking, improved presentation skills, heightened cultural awareness, and a greater empathy for the complexity of contemporary issues. Through this, the students will deepen their historical insight, improve their linguistic abilities, and serve as embassadors in their respective schools for the topic "What comes after conflict?".
