▶Objectives
We wanted to have a cultural exchange where our students could learn from students from other cultures. Our school is experiencing more diversity in our student populus than it has experienced earlier, and we thought this could be a good way to enhance the cultural understanding among our students. Understanding culture is a key to work against racism and discrimination.
▶Activities
When we hosted the students and teachers from Emsdetten, we implementet activities to boost cultural exchange, such as food tasting, social activities, a trip to Utøya, where there was a right-winged terrorist attack on the labour party's youth branch. The students also participated in an activity to learn how to decode and spot AI-generated images, compared to real images, and discussed AIs role in the spread of misinformation, and troll bots which spreads hate speech and contributes to further "othering" of other cultures.
▶Impact
We have had several outputs and results: Firstly, a group of 30 students from our school took part in the cultural exchange when we had visitors from Germany. They attended our visit to Utøya where they both got to know the history of the island and mass-shooting, and took part in a democracy workshop. Secondly, the 5 students who went to Germany prepared a presentation that they held for all of our 8th graders. They presented an overview of the trip and what they had learned during their trip. The goal was to attract new students to new projects we might apply to, and to share their knowledge. Thirdly, we have not yet found the time, but the students who went to Germany will share their experiences with our teachers this fall. Lastly, the students have shared the knowledge of our project to both the mayor of our county during the visit from Germany, and the mayor of Emsdetten during the visit to Germany.
