▶Objectives
The project aims to strengthen healthcare professionals’ competencies in shared decision-making (SDM) within orthopedic surgery by developing structured training programs. By enhancing their ability to engage in SDM, healthcare professionals will be better equipped to facilitate meaningful conversations with patients, ensuring treatment decisions reflect both clinical expertise and the preferences of patients, including those with limited health literacy.
▶Activities
To achieve these objectives, the project will follow an action-based approach, by building on a mapping of existing regional SDM training programs, identify best practices, and address gaps. Workshops will engage healthcare professionals and patients to co-develop training sessions based on real-world challenges. The training will be pilot-tested, allowing for refinement based on participant feedback. Findings will be systematically shared through national and international channels.
▶Impact
The project will lead to increased SDM competence among healthcare professionals. Adaptable training materials will be integrated into education initiatives giving examples of best practices. The project also fosters long-term collaboration between institutions, establishing a network of SDM practitioners. By equipping healthcare professionals with the necessary skills, the project contributes to a more structured, inclusive, and sustainable approach to SDM in surgical practice.
