Summary

Background About 80 million people in EU are often prevented from taking part fully in sporting activities because of different disabilities and barriers. Even if measures have been taken by the EU to promote a “barrier-free Europe” and assure the full participation in sport of persons with disabilities, it’s necessary to continue the efforts for promoting equity and inclusion of persons with disabilities. The UAN SPORT project tried to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities through/in sport. Objectives The overall aim of the project was to promote physical activity for people with disabilities, so that they can enjoy their full rights of doing sports and benefit fully from sport. The project aimed at sharing/exchanging good practices in promotion of “inclusive sport” for people with disabilities, creating and developing the cooperation of project partners at EU level and raising awareness on the role of sport for social inclusion and wellbeing of people with disabilities. Implementation Five transnational meetings and study visits took place in partners’ Countries and represented the ideal way for exchanging best practices, a precious source of inspiration for participants and for transferring new ideas and innovative models in home Countries. In addition, eleven virtual meetings contributed to strengthen the cooperation and mutual learning among partners. Finally, the social media campaigns were a powerful way for developing the cooperation also outside the partnership. Achievements The project has mainly met its initial objectives and final evaluation was very positive. Cooperation and networking activities have been of excellent level and high quality throughout the entire project duration. Partners increased their capacity to cooperate at EU level and developed innovative models using sport for social inclusion of disable people. Finally, partners agreed to develop their cooperation beyond the project end through a new initiative promoting EU inclusive sport events.
